Dialysis technicians and technologists spend more time with dialysis patients than any other health care professionals.  There are more dialysis technicians/technologists than nephrology nurses and nephrologists combined.

In most dialysis facilities, dialysis technicians perform dialysis treatments under the supervision of a registered nurse. Duties include pretreatment assessment, cannulation, initiation of treatment, treatment monitoring, discontinuation of treatment, and post-treatment assessment.

Dialysis technologists specialize in the technical operations of a dialysis facility. Duties include dialysis equipment maintenance and repair, water treatment monitoring, dialyzer reprocessing, and facility safety issues. See the Renal Career Fact Sheet for Dialysis Technologists from the National Kidney Foundation.

Dialysis Industry Consolidation Stagnates Technological Innovation - Guest posting by Mel Hodge on HemoDoc. - January 5, 2012
Editor's note: I would argue that the technological stagnation in dialysis care is due to both industry consolidation and the lack of focus on employment, rehabilitation, and quality of life. If there were financial incentives for keeping patients employed, we would see far more technological innovations and choices. We would also have dialysis machines that are much smaller, much more portable, and far easier to use. Instead, we have huge machines that are designed primarily for in-center use, easy physician rounding, and are loaded with features for short-time (and often brutal) dialysis treatments.

Has Anybody Here, Seen My Old Friend Allient? Can You Tell Me Where He's Gone? - Posting by Peter Laird, MD from HemoDoc.- January 1, 2012
Editor's note: The dialysis industry is NOT producing the technology that will improve patients' HRQOL. They are producing machines that are most profitable for the corporate operations of the large dialysis providers.
Forty years after the start of the federal dialysis program, dialysis machines should be much smaller and far easier to use than the large machines being produced for today's in-center dialysis facilities. We simply have the wrong goals for patients and the wrong financial incentives for corporations.
