Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is permanent kidney damage due to injury or disease. More than 20 million Americans-one in nine adults-have chronic kidney disease, and most don't even know it. More than 20 million others are at increased risk.

How long you can live with CKD depends on your age, other health problems, and how involved you become in your care. Some people with early CKD never experience kidney failure. Others reach kidney failure (end-stage renal disease (ESRD)) and live for decades with dialysis or kidney transplants.

Simple tests in a doctor's office can detect chronic kidney disease in its early stages when lifestyle changes and medication can be prescribed to delay or prevent the progression of kidney disease and its complications. Left untreated, chronic kidney disease may ultimately lead to kidney failure and/or heart disease.

There are many risk factors that make having CKD more likely, with the leading risk factors being diabetes, hypertension, and a family history of CKD.

Warning: Changes should never be made in a patient's treatment or care based solely on the information found here.  All patients have unique healthcare concerns and considerations and these must all be taken into account before any changes can be safely made.  All medical and therapeutic decisions must come from a qualified health care provider.  Read RenalWEB's Legal Disclaimer before proceeding.

Advancing American Kidney Health - (38-page pdf) Document from the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation. - July 2019

"As part of the Administration's focus on improving person-centered care, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is advancing kidney health to revolutionize the way patients with chronic kidney disease and kidney failure are diagnosed, treated, and most importantly, live.  The initiatives discussed in this paper are designed to tackle the challenges people living with kidney disease face throughout the stages of kidney disease, while also improving the lives of patients, their caregivers, and family members.  The overall goals of these efforts are to:  reduce the risk of kidney failure; improve access to and quality of person-centered treatment options; and increase access to kidney transplants."

Editor's note: Trump's announcement was essentially about creating financial incentives for the for-profit dialysis providers so that they will do what the non-profit providers are already doing. Renal rehabilitation is NOT mentioned in any of the documents associated with this announcement. This means that the majority of dialysis patients will continue to receive debilitating treatments. Most providers will continue to ignore their roles in the meaning and purpose of their patients' lives.

Why does this field of medicine continue to ignore the needs of its patients? Financial conflicts of interest perhaps? Shame on KCP and the ASN for putting profits ahead of patients. Rehabilitation was once an essential part of dialysis care. They should read the article below.
