EXTRANEAL (icodextrin) peritoneal dialysis solution is for use in peritoneal dialysis for the long dwell. When compared to 4.25% dextrose, EXTRANEAL can improve ultrafiltration and clearance of creatinine and urea nitrogen for certain PD patients. The most common side effect associated with EXTRANEAL
is rash. Additional side effects include peritonitis, upper respiratory
infection, and hypertension. Patients with a known allergy to cornstarch
or with glycogen storage disease should not use EXTRANEAL. For diabetic
patients, blood glucose levels must be measured with a glucose-specific
method to avoid interference by maltose, a metabolite of EXTRANEAL (icodextrin). |
